Thesis: Surface
Thesis: Surface
Surface is my undergraduate thesis project. It began with the word ‘Surface’ and a quote from Sonnenzimmer: “Graphics and music derive from the same source. Whether it’s paper, a screen, or even projected light, all graphics are bound to a surface.” From there, I began to explore the concept of a surface, the effects of time and erosion of the surface and how the message is effected.
I began with exploring the simple process of creating, erasing, and recreating a message. Documenting the destruction of the surface and distortion of the message allowed me to slow down the process and observe it repeatedly. Following that, I experimented with other surfaces and the distortion of messages depending on the perception of the permanence of the surface.
Mid-point Project
The mid-point project was a reflection of how I was examining the relationship between a simple yet powerful message and the surface it is placed on. It also incorporates my exploration on how erosion can distort and change the receiver’s reception of the message. We were also asked to submit an artist statement along with the mid-point project and were given back a selection to give us a new idea to reflect on moving forward.
